TranziT #6 – European Festival of Contemporary Theatre Practices

8.8.2025.

16th September – 23rd November 2025

The sixth edition of the TranziT festival brings powerful and relevant devised theatre performances by local and international theater artists to the Rijeka (Croatia) audience, as well as a series of other events such as workshops for the audience before the performances, moderated talks with the audience and artists right after the performances, research labs, and presentations of research lab results, along with an evening of dance films in collaboration with the renowned dance film festival Choreoscope from Barcelona. This year, over 140 applications from 36 countries across Europe and the world were received in response to the public call for participation in the festival. The festival’s artistic director, Ivana Peranić, selected five contemporary theatre performances that each address themes that are significant and relevant to us at this moment, and that inscribe paths in the minds and hearts of the audience leading to a better, more peaceful, and fairer world.

The festival opens with the international theatre group Cosmino Theatre from Poland with the play Heartburn, in which, through personal and intimate experiences, two exceptional actresses and performers Eva Rufo and Rachel Karafistan tell stories about abortion, sing about violence, and dance menopause using puppetry, comedy, song, text, and movement to create a hybrid, humorous, and powerful perspective on what it means to be a woman in Europe today. Letters from Chiran is a touching, emotionally powerful play about kamikaze pilots that connects two theater traditions – Eastern and Western. Exceptional Japanese artist based in Berlin, Tomoya Kawamura, quickly shifts into various characters through a solo performance, drawing attention to the lives of civilians during the war, highlighting the warmth and resilience found in Tomei’s ‘shokudo’ (canteen), where young pilots sought refuge and familiarity at a time when it seemed reasonable for someone to send the youngest generation of the nation to die in vain, in a completely pointless mission during an already lost war. From Italy comes Hombre Collettivo with an impressive audio-visual presentation To Arms (Alle Armi) in which, through a multitude of scenery and props on stage, they address the relationship between the arms industry and toy industry, and examine image (picture) as a form of weapon to raise awareness in the audience about that very aspect of image/picture and thereby direct them to critically observe the realities that surround us. Exploring the toy as a prop with significant theatrical and semantic possibilities, To Arms (Alle Armi) incorporates elements of object theatre, physical, non-verbal, and visual theatre, Hollywood films, musicals, television, music videos, and fashion.

One of the most significant independent dance artists of the younger generation from Rijeka, Toni Flego, is teaming up with Italian artist Jessica D’Angelo to present an original dance piece called Do You Want to Produce Me?! In a humorous way, they dive into the unique, somatic, and raw language with a sprinkle of sarcasm to explore what it really means to be an artist today and how to break free from the models and stereotypes imposed on us in contemporary art. Meanwhile, internationally acclaimed Italian-Norwegian choreographer and dancer Francesco Scavetta will showcase his latest work Nowhere like here, which addresses the topics of home and sense of belonging through dance and movement, collaborating with a fantastic international ensemble of talented dancers. Scavetta’s works are often linked to the atmosphere of a bizarre dream or the playful world of a child: wondrous, funny, poetic, and often surprising.

With a purchased ticket, the audience who wants more can reserve their spot in shorter workshops (90-120 minutes) held before the performance, allowing them to meet the artists and experience their working methods, as well as try and explore some elements of the production work. Due to the limited number of participants in the workshops, reservations are mandatory at krila.rezervacije@gmail.com. After the performance, stay, mingle, and participate in moderated talks with the artists and the audience.

For professional and upcoming artists and students, as well as other professionals interested in the theme of labs, we present two research labs that will take place on weekends. 間 MA: The Art of Silence is the first research lab that will be led by Tomoya Kawamura. The second lab is Crossing Borders: 10 Breaking Moments in Contemporary Dance,  led by Sanja Frühwald and Sunčica Bandić (VRUM), and it opens new horizons for young people aged 10 to 18, as well as young adults and all potentially interested parties.

TICKETS can be found at www.eventim.hr and at authorized Eventim sales points. For multi-day research labs, applications are made through the online application form.
